Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has been baffled following seeing the reaction of Manchester United supporters, who were delighted to have Christian Eriksen added to the squad. It can only be a substitute for the Red Devils.
Manchester United are close to signing Eriksen on a free transfer following the Dairy international’s contract with Brentford expired and it is confirmed he has agreed a three-year contract with the Red Devils.
Responding to the news of the star, 30, Murphy said it was not a reinforcement that would allow United to compete with Manchester City or Liverpool as Eriksen is not a world-class player. And it will only be drawn as a substitute for Bruno Fernandes to help turn the game in the second half only.
“I like Eriksen, I have always admired him in terms of his creativity. He has a good set-piece from both feet. But if I’m a United fan, will I be excited? Isn’t he just grabbing to reinforce the squad?” the former Reds star said on July 4 with talksport.
“He won’t play before Bruno Fernandes. Is Eriksen a world-class player? No, no, no.
“He’s only brought in because he has experience and quality, but when you look at the big matches where United will play Liverpool or City or Chelsea, will he play in the first 11? uncertain”
“For Eriksen it’s a wonderful opportunity for him to be at a big club once more, I understand that.”
“But if you want to play once morest Liverpool, City or Chelsea, he’s not a sign that United deserve.”
“Yes, he can change the game. He will play as a substitute. But can he make United equal Liverpool or City? It’s not even close.”
“Is he superior to Fernandes? Not as well, will he play in the starting line or not, is he a good addition to the squad? Yes, I deserve to be happy as a United fan or not.
Eriksen played for the Bees on a six-month contract in the second half of last season, scoring one goal and providing four assists in 11 games.
