Mistura’s Staffan speaks informally with Omar Hilale

The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Staffan de Mistura, is continuing his “informal consultations”, meeting, on Thursday, the Permanent Ambassador of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale. So far, the subject of the discussions has not been officially communicated. The UN body published the photos of their meeting on Twitter, indicating that the UN envoy then reported on the consultations he held this week to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

This meeting follows the one he had with, on March 28, the representatives of the Polisario and Algeria. De Mistura, let us recall, met the Algerian diplomat, Nacim Gaoua, with whom he discussed the Algerian position.

In addition to the parties directly concerned, the UN envoy included all the member countries of the Security Council as well as the States of the group of friends of the Sahara in his informal consultations which take place on the eve of the tabling of his report to the Council, in April .

Staffan de Mistura also met the representative of the United Kingdom, James Kariuki, and the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia.

Through his consultations, the Italian-Swedish diplomat tries to test the waters and take note of the positions of all the countries concerned. He remains committed to his initial objective of reviving the round tables following the unsuccessful attempt of his predecessor, Horst Kohler. An objective that aligns with Security Council resolution 2654, which called on the Polisario Front, Algeria and Mauritania to engage with the Personal Envoy throughout the political process, in a spirit of realism and compromise, with a view to bringing it to fruition.
