MIST, an application to easily download old macOS

How do I (re)download an older version of macOS? Depending on his knowledge and the version sought, there are several possibilities. Either we go through the Mac App Store, but the search does not return any results, we must use links given here to land directly on the system sheets. Either we go to the page Downloads du site d’Apple. Either, as detailed The Rabbit Diaryon utilise a script designed for system administrators.

But there is a new, more user-friendly solution available recently. The app MIST lists many versions of macOS and allows you to download them with one click. Versions date back to macOS 10.13 High Sierra.

For versions compatible with the Apple Silicon architecture (Big Sur and Monterey), you have the choice between the “raw” .ipsw file or the installer. The utility even gives the choice of the type of installer provided: application, disk image (useful for virtualization), ISO or package. During the download, MIST takes care of verifying the integrity of the file.

Although it is numbered “0.2” only, the utility is already well thought out and quite complete. It is able to automatically retry a download in case of failure and allows to customize the name of the downloaded files. You can also show or hide the betas of the systems as well as filter the versions only compatible with your Mac. For members of the programme Seedit is even possible to specify the URL of the catalog in the settings to make these versions appear in the app.
