Health authorities in the US state of Missouri said that a man died last Thursday following eating oysters he bought from a seafood stand.
The unidentified 54-year-old man breathed his last, as a result of being infected with a bacterium called “vibrio”, which can be found in oysters. According to “Sky News”
Vibrio is a group of bacteria that mainly infect saltwater fish, and is found extensively in polluted sea water, especially mixed with sewage.
County health department investigators found that the man had eaten raw oysters sometime in the week before his death, Yahoo said.
County health officials are urging anyone who recently bought oysters from the market to dispose of them, while investigators work to determine their source.
“There is no evidence that the seller did anything to contaminate the oysters, which were likely already contaminated when the merchant received them,” health ministry investigators said in a press release.
The officials added that all remaining oysters in the market had been banned by the Ministry of Health.
Symptoms of vibrio include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills, according to the St. Louis County Public Health Department.
The department indicated that severe illness and death resulting from infection with the bacteria is rare, and usually occurs in people with weak immune systems.
