In Missouri, the Bill 843 of Senator Mike Moon aims to make illegal “hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgical procedures for minors. A physician who prescribes or administers these treatments would have their medical license revoked.
Two more gender-related bills are scheduled for Missouri’s 2022 legislative session. The first is intended to prohibit transgender women, that is to say men who have become women in civil status, from competing in a women’s sports team.[1]. The second[2] would prohibit changing the sex listed on the birth certificate.
A proposal that is not isolated
In the United States, fifteen other states have similar bills aimed at prohibiting the “transition” of minors. Only Arkansas has come so far as to pass the law. But a federal judge blocked it from going into effect following a legal challenge by l’American Civil Liberties Union (cf. Arkansas: towards the prohibition of gender transitions for minors?).
Although data on the total number of children undergoing “bridging” treatment in Missouri are not available, Gender Pathway Services of the hospital Children’s Mercy in Kansas City received approximately 150 to 200 new patients in 2021.
