Mississippi in state of emergency over flood risk

“’Evacuate now’this is the message delivered by the mayor of Jackson, Chokwe Lumumba, to the inhabitants of Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, during his press conference on August 27”, reports the local daily The Clarion Ledger.

This message, particularly addressed to the inhabitants of flood-prone areas“was launched shortly following state governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency” and mobilized relief in prevention of the risk of overflow of several rivers, including the Pearl River (Pearl River), which crosses the capital of the State and should come out of bed this Monday, August 29, continues the local newspaper .

A recent trauma

As reminds the site of the chain CNN, the authorities of Mississippi are particularly scalded by the heavy floods which had caused significant damage in this state in the south of the United States and in its capital in 2020.

“Unfortunately, we experienced the same kind of event very recently, in 2020, and we know the kind of damage it can cause,” said the mayor to CNN reiterating its appeal to residents not to take evacuation orders lightly:

To risk the life of one individual is to risk one life too many.”
