It’s been exactly 50 years since the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin the live album “Amazing Grace“ recorded. Among the expectant listeners were her father, Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, singer Clara Ward, who had left a deep impression on Franklin, and even the then-young Mick Jagger.
What on January 13th and 14th 1972 in a small church in Los Angeles, the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, along with Reverend James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir, wrote music history. It is the best-selling album of Aretha Franklin’s (1942-2018) career of more than fifty years and that best-selling live gospel album of all time. In 2018, a documentary regarding the church concert was even released.
All songs from the legendary album
Now a big homage to “Amazing Grace” forms the conclusion of this year’s Jazz Voyeur Festival: The Black Heritage Choir, made up of singers from the Mississippi Mass Choir, will sing all the songs from this legendary album at their concert, and more more hits from Aretha Franklin.
It is also important to the choir, conducted by Jerry Calvin Smith, to pay tribute with nostalgia and feeling to those men and women who Gospel Culture in the Black Churches of the United States only made possible. Before that he brings Mallorca Gospel Choir the audience in the right mood.
