Mission: Impossible: Make way for women

2023-07-13 09:00:00

In the excellent Dead reckoning, seventh part of the Mission: Impossible saga, Tom Cruise shares the bill with no less than four women, including Vanessa Kirby and Pom Klementieff. Four strong, intelligent women who deconstruct pests with pumps and brilliantly relaunch the saga.

The Mission: Impossible movies are Tom Cruise movies, with Tom Cruise, regarding Tom Cruise, for Tom Cruise. In fact, they are entirely dedicated to Tom’s hairless body which falls, levitates, smashes, flies through the air and defies gravity. At his side, the other actors do extras, play sidekicks, swing a few blagounettes. As for the women, killers in a suit, glam or SM seductresses, they are 007-style potiches, relegated to the background, even blurred, like Michelle Monogham during the finale of the very weak Fallout in 2018. It is an understatement to say that Tom does not don’t like to share the poster and especially not with a woman, poor Jennifer Connelly in Top Gun: Maverick can testify to it…

However, everything changes with the amazing Dead reckoning, seventh installment of the saga. If Tom Cruise continues to have fun on a motorcycle, car or parachute, this time no less than four women are really leading the dance. There is of course our coverstar, the exquisite Vanessa Kirby, who once once more takes on the role of the White Widow, a businesswoman who wants to condemn all of humanity for a bonanza with lots of zeros. Pom Klementieff, alias Paris, badass killer in a kilt and Dr. Martens, who sets fire to Rome at the wheel of an armored 4X4, before sticking a rouste to Tom with iron bars in a narrow alley of Venice. Rebecca Ferguson returns as Ilsa Faust, an MI6 agent who takes out her enemies with an assault rifle. And finally, Hayley Atwell, lookalike of Lena Olin, plays Grace, intrepid thief of the key to the apocalypse that everyone is trying to recover, and the real engine of the film. Could women be the future of Mission: Impossible?

GIRL POWER

So what happened? In 2023, did the production finally understand that it was impossible to continue making films like in the last century, that the macho heroes à la James Bond are definitely has-beens and that women might dynamite the cinema of action (like in Fury Road or Black Widow)? Remarkably written, the scenario offers real roles to its heroines, complex, double characters, who think, who change, who doubt. And who do not hesitate to knock. Director Christopher McQuarrie never plays on the sexy side of his actresses, avoiding any nudity or sex scenes. In 2023, the blockbuster woman is powerful, intelligent, free, and no longer hesitates to deconstruct testosterone males with pumps in the gums. Exit toxic masculinity, welcome to girl power.
