Mission : Impossible – Dead Reckoning (Partie 1) arrives in American cinemas, with a start below estimates.
Ant-Man 3, The Flash, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Elementary : the first half of the year 2023 saw crashing at the global box office a number of major Hollywood productions. Franchise fatigue? End of superheroes? Spectators who discover their retinas? Or simply a year like the others in Hollywood?
One thing is certain: the big franchised productions, with ever more exponential budgets, are struggling more and more to make a profit. Mission : Impossible 7with Tom Cruise, will he be yet another example of this general movement?
Back on the start of the film in the United States.
Mission : Impossible – Dead box-office ?
In American cinemas, since last Wednesday, Mission : Impossible – Dead Reckoning (Partie 1) would have accumulated in the 80 million dollars in revenue, including 56.2 million between Friday and Sunday, in 4,327 cinemas. These figures are below Paramount’s expectations and estimates since it was expected that M:I 7 exceeds 60 million in revenue between Friday and Sunday, and 90 million in five days.
On such a start, it’s all regarding perspective. On the one hand, the film directed by Christopher McQuarrie failed to break the record for best starts of the franchise on the weekend of release (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). With 60 million, Dead Reckoning (Partie 1) is behind Fallout (61 million in 2018) and M:I 2 (more than 57 million in 2000, and without taking inflation into account). But if we look at the five days of this holiday weekend, these 80 million are indeed a record for the saga (higher than the 78.8 million Mission : Impossible 2).
The other argument to judge this disappointing start is called Indiana Jones. The Dial of Destiny started his career with figures close to Dead Reckoning : 60 million dollars during its traditional opening weekend, and 82 million over the long weekend. Indiana Jones 5 being already considered a flop, Mission : Impossible 7 is he doomed because of this American startup? Absolutely not.
Landing at the domestic box office
The last films with Tom Cruise have impressed at the box office with their longevity (Top Gun : Maverickwith nearly $1.5 billion in worldwide revenue across its operations) and by their international power (70% of revenue from Fallout and of Rogue Nation come from abroad).
Mission : Impossible 7 has already collected regarding 155 million abroad, in 70 territories. The blockbuster got off to a strong start in many countries, with the exception of China where Dead Reckoning does less well than Fallout. In total, the film garnered in the 235 million for its release, worldwide.
Nothing is therefore decided yet for these new adventures of Ethan Hunt at the world box office. The fact remains that the film’s production budget, around 290 million dollars (excluding promotion), stands out as a significant obstacle to its possible profitability. It is the most expensive episode of the franchise, ahead of the 180 million Fallout. Mission : Impossible – Fallout remains to this day the biggest success of the saga, with 791 million at the box office. Could the 7th episode do better?
As a reminder, Mission : Impossible – Dead Reckoning (Partie 1) is available in our French cinemas since July 12.
