The reason the deal fell through: Fulham mightn’t find an adequate replacement for the Portuguese international just before the transfer window closed.
Nizaar Kinsella, football reporter at the London newspaper Evening Standard and, in addition to Chelsea FC, is also primarily responsible for FC Fulham, reports in an interview with SPORT1: “The Fulham managers agreed to a deal with Bayern because he really wanted this change . That’s why he was allowed to travel to Germany for a medical check-up.”
Apparently the London bosses were convinced that they would find a successor in time. Fulham insider Kinsella: “The main news here in England has been a potential transfer of Tottenham player Pierre-Emile Hojberg to Fulham, but the real frontrunner was Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.”
But the 26-year-old Scot is said to have resisted moving to London. The decisive domino did not fall. “And of course Fulham mightn’t release Palhinha then,” says Kinsella.
Fulham coach Marco Silva is said to have played a crucial role in the negotiations. Kinsella believes Silva would have considered retiring even if his compatriot had been handed in without a replacement.
“Silva only has a contract until 2024 and there are increasing signs that he is more and more dissatisfied with not being able to take the club to the next level in terms of transfers. Silva sees Palhinha as the most important player for his team and project, a sale – with or without a replacement – would have been very frustrating news for him.”
In January, however, Bayern might make their next attempt at Palhinha. According to SPORT1 information, the player would still like to join the German record champions.
“They may not be able to avoid it if Palhinha and Bayern get serious,” says Kinsella, but also reminds: “Fulham will definitely need a replacement. I can imagine that both McTominay and Hojberg will be topics once more.”
