The expatriate Katerina Karandrika was named “Miss Greek Independence» in the beauty pageant held in New York and held on the followingnoon of Saturday 3/30/2024, at the Greek Cultural Center of the Archdiocese of America in Astoria (Thespis Theatre).
It is a competition, which is a parallel event to the parade on 5th Avenue, which does not, in essence, have the character of a beauty contest, but is more connected to the knowledge and perspective of each candidate towards the Greek heritage and the relationship with the Greek-American Community.
This year, the organizers decided to diversify the style of the event, choosing a different venue from the Stathakio Cultural Center, entrusting, among others, the artistic director of Thespis Theater, Alexandros Famaghostianos, with the organization of the production, with the aim of giving an alternative note in terms of the flow but also the general entertainment of the public.
At the same time, as the National Herald reports, for the first time in several years, a greater interest in participation was observed, as a total of 12 Greek-American women took part in the competition, who received positive comments for their presence and answers, which were given in the English language.
The jury, which included: Dimitris Filios, Iulia Kokkosis, Yannis Stroumbakis, Eleni Psara and Athanasia Filouhad difficulties regarding the final selection of the winner, as a result of which Katerina Karandrika and Eleni Tsiouri, who was finally selected as the first alternate, tied and needed an additional question to draw safe conclusions.
According to the final announcements, Katerina Karandrika was named “Miss Greek Independence”, h Eleni Tsiouris first substitute, h Elaina Poulos second substitute and followed in order of announcement: Jenny Daska (“Miss Athens”), Ariana Siotopoulou (“Miss Macedonia”), Nicoletta Arlotta (“Miss Olympia”), Maria Theodorellou (“Miss Peloponnese”), Maria Potamousi (“Miss Aigio”), Urania Bozou (“Miss Pieria”), Alexandra Gel (“Miss Arcadia”) and Stamatola Fitzgerald (“Miss Dodecanese”).
For her part, Nomiki Kastana also thanked for their contribution the members of the Cultural Committee Sofia Stroumbakis and Spyridoula Tsoukalas, as well as the artists who entertained the public in the interval of waiting for the announcement of the results
