The managers of third-party payers Viamedis and Almerys were targeted by cyberattacks, compromising the personal information of more than 33 million people according to the CNIL (National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties), or one in two French people.
The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into these cyberattacks which might constitute one of the most massive data leaks observed in France. The investigations follow complaints from the two service providers.
Viamedis and Almerys are two companies serving as intermediaries between healthcare professionals – doctors, pharmacists, opticians, etc. – and health supplements. Viamedis is owned by the complementary Malakoff Humanis (whose “boutique” is located at 13 La Canebière, in the 1st arrondissement of Marseille, Editor’s note).
The attack was carried out through the theft of health professionals’ identifiers and passwords. The alert was given on February 1 by Viamedis, which detected the attack and warned other third-party payment platforms. A few days later, Almerys announced that it had also detected an intrusion.
