A pre-teen girl miraculously survived being bitten twice by a shark off a Florida beach and was left with 100 puncture wounds to her thigh that left her leg “drip” with blood.
Magnolia Woodhead, 12, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was visiting Cocoa Beach near Orlando for a gymnastics competition when she was bitten twice by a shark on Monday, June 28.
When her father pulled her out of the water, her mother, Melissa Stallings, saw that Woodhead’s leg was dripping with blood and the girl was rushed to the hospital with ’75 to 100 [marcas de mordedura] up and down her little thigh.’ Woodhead received 50 stitches.
After being released from the hospital, she had to use a wheelchair to get around, including on her trip to Disney World.
And though she mightn’t compete in this year’s gymnastics meet, Woodhead cheered on her teammates from the sidelines.
“I was there because I really wanted to support my teammates because I know they’ve worked really hard in this contest and stuff,” he told Fox 35.
“The shark bite was not on the agenda for the day,” his mother told the outlet.
Many sharks are lingering along the East Coast this holiday weekend, with regarding 20 currently between Long Island and Cape Cod. Dozens of sharks have been sighted along the Florida Panhandle in recent days.
Cocoa Beach, located in Brevard County, is just an hour from Volusia County, known as the shark bite capital of the world.
Florida has the most unprovoked attacks in the US since last year. The 16 Sunshine State cases represent regarding 40 percent of the total unprovoked bites in the US.
There have only been regarding 1,200 shark attacks worldwide in the last 50 years, representing a 14 percent fatality rate, according to Floridapanhandle.com.
Australia for its part ranks second with just over 250 attacks in the last 50 years, according to Floridapanhandle.com.
Of the 1,200 attacks, great white sharks accounted for almost 180 of them.
A Massachusetts police officer shot and wounded a man with a sword
In other events, last May, a Massachusetts police officer shot and wounded a man who was moving toward the officer wielding a sword, authorities said.
The officer, who was not injured, was given paid administrative leave under department protocol when an officer shoots someone, the district attorney’s office said, without releasing the names of the officer or suspect.
As of now, state and local police are still investigating the shooting.
