Abigail Amoretti flies from Managua, Nicaragua to Miamito visit her grandmother. However, the 17-year-old is plagued by abdominal pain, which is why she goes to the toilet. At first she has no idea that labor has started – following all, she is only seven months pregnant.
A doctor on board the flight however, hears the screams from the airplane toilet and realizes the seriousness of the situation. She and other doctors present on board lay the mother giving birth on towels in the aisle of the plane, according to local media reports. However, all this is of no use: the birth develops into a drama.

At first the baby appears to be born feet first, and then the doctors present determine that the child is not breathing. «When the girl came out, she was completely lifeless. She was all purple from the stress she had to endure,” says one doctor.
The on-site experts know what needs to be done: A doctor immediately starts mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, two other doctors perform a heart rhythm massage. The efforts bear fruit and a little later the baby begins to breathe once more. After a few minutes, the girl’s first baby cries can be heard on the plane.
Due to the unplanned birth, the plane had to adjust its course and make an emergency landing in Cancún, Mexico. There, the new mother is transported from the plane in a wheelchair. And a paramedic takes the baby wrapped in a blanket overboard. The two remain in Mexico for the time being, where they can fully recover. The visit of her grandmother should therefore be delayed for Abigail Amoretti.
