The high representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, indicated on October 3 that the election records presented by the Carter Center Before the Organization of American States (OAS) they reaffirm the position of not recognizing Nicolás Maduro as democratically elected president of Venezuela.
Borrell stressed that the Carter Center is a “prestigious” institution, and that if it presents these documents as the original electoral records “they are,” since he does not believe that they show anything that does not faithfully correspond to reality.
“These minutes, together with those presented by the opposition, reflect a result that we have always pointed out, that Maduro did not win the elections and the opposition leader who is currently a refugee in Spain won them,” he added in reference to Edmundo González.
The high representative of the EU explained that he learned about the presentation of these minutes at the OAS through the media. He added that until now they were aware of the documents presented by the opposition, which reflect a result similar to that contained in the Carter Center minutes.
Borrell also took advantage of his intervention to thank the Spanish government for taking steps so that González could leave Venezuela and move to Spain on September 8 to request asylum.
Presentation of the minutes before the OAS
Jennie Lincoln, senior advisor at the Carter Center, presented the minutes to the OAS Permanent Council on October 2.
“It was sent to me by international mail. These are original minutes from Venezuela that have a QR code that is significant and that allows witnesses from thousands and thousands of tables to systematically collect information,” Lincoln said at a press conference.
He stressed that the original documents were collected and analyzed by both independent observers and the Venezuelan opposition. However, the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections.
“The original data from the CNE showed that Edmundo González had won with 67% and Nicolás Maduro had obtained 31%,” declared the representative of the Carter Center, an organization that was an international observer in the elections.
For her part, Ana Irene Delgado, representative of Panama, criticized that the Maduro government announced a victory without presenting the minutes, which is why it “lost the support” of its “most loyal defenders in the region,” referring to political leaders. like the leaders of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who have not recognized the victory announced by the CNE.
“Claiming a victory without presenting minutes is like trying to win a trial without providing evidence. It is a way of not accepting defeat,” Delgado expressed in his speech.
Position of the Maduro government
The Minister of the Interior of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, reacted after the presentation of the minutes at the OAS and downplayed the fact.
“We don’t care what the OAS says, we don’t care what this lady from the Carter Center says,” Cabello said.
While the president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, also rejected Lincoln’s statements, whom he pointed out as “an agent of the USAID (US Agency for International Development).”
“He spews lies and attacks Venezuela. “We will not echo their garbage,” Rodríguez said on his Instagram account.
Opposition reactions
The Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) thanked the Carter Center for presenting the electoral records that show the “fraud” of the presidential elections.
“The Carter Center confirms that even officials of Plan República (the military device that guards the elections in Venezuela) know the real results: Edmundo González Urrutia is the elected president,” the PUD said through a message on its X account. on October 2.
For her part, opposition leader María Corina Machado pointed out that the electoral records that the Carter Center presented represent physical proof of González’s victory.
“The minutes reached the OAS. “The world knows what happened on July 28, now they have the truth in their hands,” Machado said in a post on his social networks.
