The UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) denied, on Wednesday on Twitter, a rumor circulating on social networks, saying that the Mission has auctioned off its armored vehicles in Kidal, northern Mali.

The Minusma affirms that it “does not sell armored vehicles”, specifying on the same occasion, that it “regularly auctions non-hazardous waste within the framework of a transparent tender procedure”, but “armored vehicles are not affected by sale or donation, in accordance with UN rules”.

These rumors on social networks come as MINUSMA has begun its withdrawal from the country, which should end on December 31. The decision on said withdrawal was taken on June 30 by the UN Security Council, following a request to that effect from the transitional government in Bamako.

The Minusma also specifies that it has begun talks with the Malian authorities in order to guarantee an orderly, secure and coordinated withdrawal, adding that two meetings have already taken place on July 11 and July 3.

The second meeting “made it possible to move forward (…) to allow the withdrawal plan to enter the active phase of implementation. I think that will be the case very quickly,” said El-Ghassim Wane, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Mali and Head of MINUSMA.

“I must salute the Head of Mission and his entire team for the truly cooperative spirit and the mutual commitment to do everything to be able to do this (the withdrawal) within the timeframe indicated”, declared for his part, the Head of Malian diplomacy.
