HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Gardner Minshew will get a chance to start for the Raiders when they open their season next month.

Las Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce made the announcement Sunday. Minshew was endorsed by Aidan O’Connell.

Pierce said Minhsu’s experience and his handling of the offense give him an advantage.

“Some of the things he showed in practice showed up in the game,” Pierce said. “We still have a lot to improve on, but based on our expectations going into the first quarter of the season, we felt like Gardner gave us a better chance.”

The Raiders will face the San Francisco 49ers on Friday in their final preseason game. They will begin play against the Chargers on September 8 in Los Angeles.

Last season, Minshew led the Indianapolis Colts to a 7-6 record as a starter, passing for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He returned to Las Vegas and signed a two-year, $25 million deal.

O’Connell went 5-4 in his rookie season in Las Vegas.

Minshew completed 10-of-21 passes for 95 yards against the Cowboys in Saturday night’s 27-12 preseason loss to Dallas, while O’Connell was 14-of-20 for 96 yards. Passed a touchdown and was intercepted for a touchdown.

The week before in Minnesota, O’Connell led the team on 15 carries, 83 yards and a field goal, while Minshew led three drives and 17 points.

Minshew won the championship, but that didn’t mean he would remain the champion for the entire season.

“I tell them all to be prepared,” Pierce said. “Aidan is a young player with huge potential but Gardner has done a great job.”
