COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The No. 16 Minnesota volleyball team lost to the Maryland Terrapins in a five set battle (18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 10-15) Friday on the road at Xfinity Center Pavilion.
The Golden Gophers attack was paced by Lydia Grote, who finished with 18 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .279. Mckenna Wucherer, had 14 kills, while, defensively, the ‘U’ had three players reach double figures in digs.
Kylie Murr tied her season-high with 27 while Elise McGhie had 14 and Taylor Landfair tallied 13. From the front row, Arica Davis and Lydia Grote added seven rejections, season-bests for both players.
Minnesota hit .124 with 52 kills, 75 digs, 11 blocks and six aces while Maryland hit .144 with 57 kills, 74 digs, 17 blocks and eight aces.
Sam Csire paced the Terrapins with 20 kills and seven digs.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Golden Gophers found themselves in an early deficit, losing a tough first set 25-18. Minnesota trailed by as many as seven points as Maryland never gave up the lead in the set.
SET 2 | Minnesota evened the match at 1-1 following a 25-22 second-set win. The Golden Gophers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. The Golden Gophers racked up 17 kills over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Minnesota grabbed a 2-1 match lead following taking down the Terrapins in set three. The Golden Gophers grabbed control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 26-24. Minnesota led by eight points at 18-10 before closing out the set. The Minnesota offense also got a boost from four aces in the frame.
SET 4 | Minnesota mightn’t close out the match, as the Terrapins forced a fifth set with a 25-21 fourth-set win. The Golden Gophers trailed by as many as six points as Maryland grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 and Minnesota was never able to recover in a set that was tied up four times before the Terrapins took over the lead.
SET 5 | Minnesota opened a lead of two sets to one before losing the final two sets, including a 15-10 loss in the fifth set. The Golden Gophers had a lead early in the set before Maryland took over, leading from 7-6 to the finish.

» Minnesota had never lost to Maryland before tonight. The Gophers were 18-0 in the all-time series.
» Zeynep Palabiyik had a team-high two aces in the loss.
» Lydia Grote had a team-high 18 kills for Minnesota, her seventh double figure kill match of the year. She also had a career-high seven blocks.
» Minnesota got a match-high 27 digs from Kylie Murr, her third 20+ dig match of the season.
» Minnesota attackers were helped by a match-high 39 assists from Elise McGhie, who also added season bests in digs (14), kills (4) and blocks (2). She started in place of Melani Shaffmaster, who missed the game with an illness.

» Mckenna Wucherer put down 14 kills, her 11th 10+ kill match of the season.
