History

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State women’s basketball (9-4, 6-1 NSIC) took down Concordia-St. Paul (9-3, 5-2 NSIC) at home, 72-61 in the Mavericks’ final game of the 2023 calendar year. Joey Batt led Minnesota State in scoring and in steals (17 points and six steals) in the win over the Golden Bears. With this win, the Mavericks win their seventh-straight game and take control of the number one spot in the NSIC standings.

The beginning of the first quarter was slow, with the score resting at 7-6, in favor of Minnesota State, with four minutes gone by in the period. Destinee Bursch scored an and-one layup with 3:58 left in the quarter to cap off the 8-0 run for the Mavericks to put the team up 15-6. The quarter ended with Minnesota State up 21-11.

Concordia started the second quarter on fire. Emma Mommsen made two layups and Jalyn Shaw a three-pointer for the Golden Bears to cut the Minnesota State lead to three, 21-18. The Mavericks went on a run of their own, however, with Batt and Bursch each making layups to put the Mavericks up 27-18. The half ended with Minnesota State up 41-28, as the Mavericks closed out the half on a 14-10 run led by Batt and Emily Herzberg who both had four points in the final stretch of the second quarter.

The Mavericks shot 40.5% in the first half (17-42 FG), making one of their nine three-point attempts and 6-7 from the free throw line. Minnesota State forced 20 first half turnovers, including 13 steals, scoring 25 points off those turnovers.

Batt led all scorers with 11 first half points. She also had two steals heading into halftime. Hannah Herzig had nine points, two rebounds, two assists and five steals once morest Concordia in the first half. Bursch also contributed seven points and two assists to the Mavericks’ total. Emily Russo had four points and five rebounds in the first half.

Concordia shot 48% from the field in the first half. The Bears outrebounded the Mavericks 22-17. Mommsen and Megan Gamble led the Golden Bears in scoring, scoring eight and seven points, respectively.

The Golden Bears started the second half on a 12-4 run led by Gamble who scored six points on two 3-pointers. Minnesota State responded in a big way, going on a 14-0 run on 6-7 shooting to end the third period. Bremer had six points to lead the Mavericks in that run. The quarter ended with a score of 59-40.

Concordia once more came out of the break strong, starting the final quarter on a 7-2 run led by Lindsey Becherwho had four points in that stretch. The Bears battled their way back into the game, bringing the Maverick lead within six points, but ultimately, Minnesota State closed out the game by a final score of 72-61.

The Mavericks shot 38.4% from the field (28-73 FG) and made just one three-pointer in the team’s 14 attempts. Minnesota State shot 15-17 from the free throw line. The team forced 35 turnovers, recorded 22 steals and scored 38 of its points off of turnovers.

Batt was the leading scorer for the Mavericks, dropping 17 points on 8-13 shooting from the floor. The senior also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and had six steals. Bursch was right behind Batt in scoring, finishing with 16 points, two rebounds, four assists and three steals. Herzig finished with 15 points, three assists and five steals. Bremer had 12 points on 6-9 shooting. Mackenzie Schweim was the top rebounder for the Mavericks, rebounding eight missed shots.

Concordia-St. Paul shot 43.3% from the field (26-60 FG) and 33% from beyond the arc (5-15 3-pt). The Bears outrebounded Minnesota State 45-37, but ultimately turned the ball over 35 times, allowing easy buckets on the other end of the floor. Gamble and Becher each finished with 16 points. Becher also grabbed seven rebounds, and recorded two assists, two blocks and two steals.  Gamble finished with four rebounds, two assists and three steals. The Mavericks held the Bears’ top scorer, Ally Gietzelto just two points on 0-8 shooting.

Minnesota State returns to action in 2024 on Friday, Jan. 5, as the Mavericks face Northern State (9-3, 5-1 NSIC) at home at 7:30 p.m. The Wolves won the last matchup and have won eight of the last 10 once morest the Mavericks.
