Ministry: this semester, social scholarships are awarded to about 2.3 thousand people. students

More than 3.6 million students are provided with financial and social challenges. state support, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports announced on Tuesday.

The social scholarship amounts to almost 320 euros per month and is paid until the end of the semester.

“We aim to ensure that quality studies are available to all groups of society in Lithuania. Students from a socially sensitive environment especially need the state’s help in opening up all opportunities to pursue higher education and receive academic support,” says Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports Justas Nugaras.

“To help them, we have provided not only scholarships – we have already initiated a plan to increase access to higher education, which encourages higher education institutions to accept more young people experiencing social risk who are willing and ready to study,” he says.

Social grants are awarded to students receiving social benefits who have 45% or a lower level of working capacity or a severe or moderate level of disability, as well as for students under the age of 25 whose parents are dead or who have been assigned guardianship or care until they reach adulthood.

This semester, the most such scholarships are 1.3 thousand. – intended for socially disadvantaged students. Another 560 scholarships are intended for students who have lost their parents or grew up in foster families, 400 scholarships for those with disabilities.

In Lithuania, in order to ensure equal opportunities for all social groups to pursue higher education, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports approved a plan for increasing access to higher education.

It foresees the creation of an additional competitive queue next year for applicants from socially sensitive backgrounds and those with disabilities who meet the admission requirements. According to this order, it is planned to distribute one tenth of the state-financed study places.

Also, starting next year, the model of state funding for high schools’ incentive based on performance results will start to operate, based on which no less than 5 percent will be allocated to high schools for achievements in six evaluated areas, including access to studies. all last year’s state budget funds for the basic funding of studies. It is planned to increase this percentage later.

As early as 2022, colleges will start offering short studies – an alternative path to higher education. These studies are most relevant for those who have obtained a professional education and wish to continue their studies in higher education institutions, as well as for individuals experiencing financial difficulties – these studies allow you to acquire qualifications faster and immediately start your professional career.

Applications for the social scholarship for the spring semester of 2024 will be available from January 20 to February 20. Social scholarships are administered by the State Study Fund (VSF).

Other scholarships are awarded to Lithuanian students: incentive scholarships for excellent academic results, scholarships named following the Presidents, study scholarships for those with the highest scores who have entered non-state-funded study places, targeted scholarships for those who have chosen priority study programs.
