The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy agreed to strengthen trade cooperation through improvement of the Korea-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by attending the ASEAN-related Economic Ministers Meeting held in Cambodia on the 16th and 18th. said on the 18th.
First, Director Ahn attended the 19th ASEAN-Korea Economic Ministers Meeting on the 16th and agreed to facilitate trade and investment and strengthen supply chain connectivity through smooth implementation and improvement of the Korea-ASEAN FTA, which came into effect in 2009. In addition, the ‘Korea-ASEAN Startup Policy Roadmap’ was finally approved, and specific cooperative projects such as nurturing regional experts and business networking will be carried out in earnest.
On the next day, the 17th, I attended the ’25th ASEAN+3 (Korea, China, Japan) Economic Ministers Meeting’. At this meeting, the ‘ASEAN+3 Economic Cooperation Work Program 2023-2024 Plan’ was adopted. Accordingly, ASEAN + Korea, China and Japan plan to strengthen cooperation for the next two years to enhance companies’ use of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), revitalize the digital economy, and improve the capabilities of SMEs.
Director Ahn also participated in the 1st RCEP Ministerial Meeting and discussed ways to establish the RCEP implementation system, such as the establishment of an auxiliary body for the RCEP joint committee and the secretariat. RCEP is the world’s largest ‘mega FTA’ in which 15 countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and 10 ASEAN countries participated. In Korea, it came into effect on February 1 of this year.
