The ‘Police Department’, which will be in charge of police-related affairs in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, was launched today.

In 1991, 31 years following the Security Headquarters under the Ministry of Home Affairs was separated into the National Police Agency, a new police organization was established within the Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

The Police Department consists of 16 people in 3 departments: the General Support Division, the Human Resources Support Division, and the Autonomous Police Support Division.

Among them, 11 of the 12 police officers, including Police Chief Kim Soon-ho, Public Security Supervisor and Superintendent Bang Yu-jin, who was appointed as the head of the personnel support department, were selected from the ‘non-police unit’.

All seven members of the National Police Commission held a press conference today in relation to the launch of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security’s police department and expressed “regret”.

Meanwhile, the National Police Agency’s Human Rights Committee recommended that the Commissioner of the National Police Agency stop taking various disadvantageous measures once morest Superintendent Ryu Sam-young and attendees, who were ordered to stand-by following leading a national police chiefs’ meeting to collect opinions on the establishment of the police station.

The Human Rights Committee of the National Police Agency said that the free expression of diverse opinions must be strongly protected to prevent self-righteousness and errors by government policy makers.
