Ministry of Labor Meets with UTA to Resolve Wage Conflict in Argentine Bus Industry

The Automotive Tramway Union (UTA) meets this Wednesday, June 21 at 4:00 p.m. with authorities from the Transport Chambers at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor to try to unblock the wage conflict in the interior provinces of Argentina. If they do not reach an agreement, they promised that they will carry out a 48-hour strike starting at midnight on Thursday.

The UTA announced and lifted a collective strike scheduled for last Tuesday, June 13 at the AMBA. The strike was suspended because the companies granted “the requested salary increases” in the mentioned area. In any case, the interruption of the service was felt -although in a different way- in the rest of the country.

From the union they expressed that the employer intends to impose a “precariousness of working conditions” and a “reduction of sources of work.” In addition, they pointed out that due to the “highly inflationary” economy, they suffer a “reduction in salaries” due to the delay in reaching an agreement.

How much does a bus driver charge?

After the agreement reached between the parties last week, the basic remunerative salaries of the AMBA drivers remained at 262,000 pesos as of April, plus a fixed sum of 32,000 pesos. In May they rise to 284 thousand; in June, 320 thousand; in July, 346 thousand; in August, 374 thousand, and in September, 404 thousand. There are also improvements in travel expenses and other expenses.

The UTA, before that proposal, sought to raise the basic salary in a staggered manner to 348,800 pesos in July, 380,192 pesos in August and 414,409 pesos in September. In addition, he claimed a one-time non-remunerative sum of 32,000 pesos, which was granted.

What do the bus companies say?

Faced with union requests for “urgent salary recomposition”, the automotive transport business chambers assured that to improve conditions they need greater state subsidies.

According to estimates from the Argentine Association of Automotive Transport Entrepreneurs (AAETA), to grant the claimed improvement they need an income of 6,216 million extra pesos per month.

This amount would imply “regarding 25 pesos per trip” that should be added to the rate or compensated with subsidies, since each update in the ticket price since March 2023 was deducted from State transfers to companies.

In addition, the transport companies reproach the national authorities that, due to the removal of subsidies, it is not possible to comply with the renewal of the vehicle fleet to “guarantee the safety of travel.”
