Ministry of Justice investigates death of inmate at Coronel Oviedo Regional Prison

Asuncion, IP.- Following the death of inmate Luciano Brítez Brandell, who was held in Pavilion “D” of the Regional Penitentiary of Coronel Oviedo, the Ministry of Justice reported on the opening of an investigation process in order to clarify the circumstances in which the incident occurred.According to preliminary data, at approximately 6:30 p.m. this Friday, inmates Mario Santacruz and Narciso Ayesa entered cell 11 of Pavilion D and stabbed Luciano Brítez Brandell.

Following the incident, the prison guards who were in the vicinity of the place intervened and the Prison Directorate ordered the transfer of the victim to the Regional Hospital of Coronel Oviedo, where his death was confirmed.

During the brawl, inmate Mario Santacruz also suffered leg injuries and was also treated at the Coronel Oviedo Hospital.

Once the incident occurred, the Ministry of Justice immediately reported the incident to the Aguapey Police Station, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Medical Examiner, in order to determine any liability.

The State Department is also at the disposal of the intervening authorities and will provide details of the incident in order to clarify the circumstances in which it occurred.
