Ministry of Health Punishes Hospital in Erbil for Newborn Abuse: Controversial Video Sparks Outrage

The ministry said in a statement reported by “Shafaq News” agency that “its procedures include seven points, which are exempting the two nurses in the hospital, namely (G, A. A.) and (S, S, M), despite the lack of a permit for their work on the hospital’s list, and stopping them from working in the medical field.” health for six months.

The procedures also included “closing the department of newborns (premature babies) in the hospital due to the lack of health conditions until the organization and follow-up of health instructions, and the closure and suspension of the department of obstetric surgery.”

According to the statement, “the director and the hospital will be punished according to the fines for violations and the hospital director will be warned for the work of doctors, employees and hospital workers according to the list approved by the Ministry of Health, in addition to transferring the file of the violation of patients’ rights to the competent court.”

Shafaq News agency contacted the abused child’s aunt, who was one of the nurses accused of abuse, and preferred not to reveal her name, as she said, “The clip was filmed at the request of the child’s parents, and its aim is to caress the child, not to abuse her.”

She added, “The hospital staff are not entitled to use phones during operations, but they entered the phone with the approval of the hospital administration.”

The hospital administration confirmed to “Shafaq News” agency that “this child stayed less than 24 hours in the premature ward in order to check on her health,” pointing out that “the video clip that spread on social media was manipulated, sped up, music was put on it, and the original copy of the video clip preserved by us.”

The administration added, “After the fact emerged that the family did not have any problems with the two nurses, we are working with the concerned authorities to return them to work, as they are part of the child’s family.” (Arabic)
