The Ministry of Health announced that the Minister of Health, Fahd bin Abdul Rahman Al-Jalajel, has approved decisions to impose two penalties on a company during the first half of the current year 2023 for violating the system for trading breast milk substitutes.

The Ministry of Health stated that the committee to review provisions for violations of the system of trading breast-milk substitutes and its implementing regulations, whose membership consists of the Ministries of Health, Commerce and Justice, approved these penalties; Where several violations of the system of circulation of breast-milk substitutes were monitored, and these two decisions were issued for those violations with financial fines amounting to (250,000) riyals.

The violations consisted of representatives of the Breast Milk Substitutes Company entering hospitals and distributing brochures regarding breast milk substitutes in the Eastern Province, which is a violation of Article 5 of the system, which stipulates the prohibition of and promotion in any way for breast milk substitutes and infant food.

The Ministry of Health added that these decisions and penalties were issued due to the importance of applying regulations and monitoring the performance of regulations and systems that promote and protect the health of community members, especially infants, and provide them with proper nutrition through breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding.

And not to give the opportunity to violate the regulations, whether by government or private institutions or companies, or individuals working in health institutions, or private companies with breast milk substitutes supplied or distributed to it. The correct formula for breast milk substitutes in case of need, which is approved by the attending physician.

It is noteworthy that the system for trading breast milk substitutes in the Kingdom was issued by a royal decree in 2004, and its executive regulations were updated by a decision of the Minister of Health in 2019, in compliance with the implementation of the International Code for Marketing Breast Milk Substitutes, which the Kingdom signed to apply in 1981 AD.
