Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Health is implementing a strategy to outsource hemodialysis services, guaranteeing access to this vital treatment for more than 1,000 patients in 15 private centers nationwide.
This initiative complements the care provided to 1,710 people in the 14 hemodialysis centers under the Public Health system, as well as the Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) service, which is performed at the patient’s home without the need for equipment, thus offering a range of therapeutic options for 88 people with chronic kidney disease.
Patients who finish their acute treatment at the Itauguá National Hospital, for example, have the option of continuing their hemodialysis in outsourced centers in cities such as Coronel Oviedo, Encarnación or Caacupé.
The aim is to facilitate access to treatment and prevent patients from dropping out, especially for those patients who live far from large hospitals, the health ministry said.
The Ministry of Health has current contracts with outsourced centers in Concepción, Alto Paraná, Coronel Oviedo, Misiones, Itapúa, Caacupé, in addition to an agreement with the Tesãi Foundation in Ciudad del Este.
As regards Asunción, the national public tender is currently in the process of being signed. This network of centres guarantees broad coverage at a national level, providing quality care to patients who require haemodialysis on a regular basis.
The outsourcing strategy has proven effective, with the number of patients requiring this treatment increasing by 9 to 10 percent annually.
This reflects the growing demand for dialysis services in the country and the importance of having accessible and convenient options for patients, including both hemodialysis and CAPD.
Tender for the purchase of new machines for the National
Currently, the Itaugua National Hospital has 27 dialysis machines that operate 24 hours a day on a rotating shift schedule, providing daily care to about 120 people. This allows patients to be cared for in four shifts, including a night shift for those who require dialysis during the early morning hours.
Next week, the call for tenders for the acquisition of more hemodialysis equipment for this service will be published on the National Public Procurement Directorate’s website. The award is expected to be made by the end of September.
In addition, the hospital has implemented a transportation system for those patients who need to be transferred from their homes to the medical center for treatment in the early hours of the morning. The hospital’s ambulances carry out these transfers in a coordinated manner, ensuring that patients arrive on time for their dialysis sessions and can return home safely.
