Ministry of Health analyzes five cases of the BA.2 sublineage of Ómicron, in Guayaquil

The Ministry of Health received notification of five instances of Omicron’s BA.2 sublineageon Guayaquil. According to the guidelines, these cases – alerted by universities that carry out virus sequencing – must be confirmed by the National Institute of Public Health Research (INSPI).

Given this, that State portfolio began the epidemiological fence of the contacts of the identified people. “They are under the monitoring of medical personnel.”

It was also clarified that in the countries where the presence of this sublineage has been confirmed, it is known to be more contagious. “But there is no evidence that it is more lethal.”

For this reason, its epidemiological surveillance systems remain active; as well as the network of genomic sequencing laboratories to identify -as in this case- the appearance of new sublineages.

The Ministry ensures that it has the necessary resources and hospital infrastructure to care for those infected.

In this regard, the Holy Spirit University (UEES) reported that it detected the five cases during the last sequencing process of complete genomes.

The first cases of this subvariant of omicron in Ecuador are: a 56-year-old woman with full vaccination dose who tested positive on February 26. Two other cases are unvaccinated peoplediagnosed on March 2, 2022.

The Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, announced that the Government is already thinking of administering the fourth dose once morest Covid-19 due to the spread of the omicron variant.
