The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 1st that it is supporting working-level consultations through the local diplomatic mission on local schedule coordination, movement, and safety issues regarding the promotion of the visit of the People’s Power Representative Lee Jun-seok to Ukraine.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the same day, “We are closely communicating with the Ukrainian side through diplomatic channels so that the delegation’s visit can go smoothly.”
Representative Lee and the special delegation of the Korea-Ukraine Free and Peace Solidarity have announced that they will visit Ukraine as soon as possible following the June 1 local elections are over.
The exact date of the visit and the size of the delegation have not been confirmed yet. Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are also known to accompany the event.
Some are concerned regarding the visit to Ukraine by a representative of a party that does not directly deal with foreign affairs. This is because it is necessary to consider diplomatic implications such as relations with Russia in the future.
In response, an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, “There are cases in which members of Congress such as the United States and Germany have visited Ukraine,” and explained that there is no problem in principle with President Lee’s visit itself.
