(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Su-jin Oh = The government is reviewing the composition of a consultative body in which several ministries participate in case the reconstruction and restoration work of Ukraine proceeds in earnest.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs met with reporters on the 8th and said regarding the government’s plan to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine, “At an appropriate time, we will review and push forward what can be done at the pan-government level.”
Currently, Ukraine is in a state of devastating a large part of its territory due to the prolonged invasion of Russia. Significant damage has been done to key infrastructure as well as education and health systems.
The Ukrainian government plans to improve the overall constitution of society to the level of advanced European countries, not just physical recovery from such damage.
Accordingly, the Korean government will form a consultative body in which various ministries participate to help Ukraine’s national reconstruction.
“We also plan to have an opportunity to personally contact key Ukrainian officials and institutions to discuss in detail what is expected of us,” the official said. Through this, the scope of participation in reconstruction and restoration will be specified.
It is difficult to predict when the Russian invasion of Ukraine will end, but the international community has already started discussing the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Thirty-eight countries and international organizations, including South Korea, recently discussed the direction of Ukraine’s reconstruction at the ‘Ukraine Recovery Conference’ (URC) held in Switzerland. From Korea, 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Do-hoon attended.
At the meeting, the Prime Minister of Ukraine announced an estimate that the reconstruction would require $750 billion.
The official explained that the meeting was “a kind of ‘kick-off’ meeting that emphasizes the importance of reconstruction and restoration and shows the will of the international community to support it.”
Regarding the invitation of Korea to a meeting mainly attended by Western countries such as Europe, he said, “I think that Ukraine has been evaluated as an important partner in cooperation in the reconstruction and restoration process.”
