The Ministry of Culture and Sports rejects that the Public Ministry (MP) uses two properties to install sub-headquarters of the Prosecutor’s Office for Violence once morest Women and the Prosecutor’s Office once morest Extortion in Antigua Guatemala, as it assures that these properties are intended for the promotion of culture and art in the Colonial City.
Culture’s statement came following the attorney general, María Consuelo Porras Argueta, took a tour of those properties in the company of the mayor of Antigua Guatemala, Juan Manuel Asturias, and was informed of the intentions to install the prosecutor’s offices in question.
“The properties located on 4th west street, between fourth and fifth north avenues, in the municipality of Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, are property of the Nation, and are attached to the Ministry of Culture and Sports, as stated in the Government Agreements No. . 371-97 and No. 67- 2013, respectively,” says the Ministry of Culture in a statement posted on its social networks.
The document adds that “these heritage assets that constitute a single body are a valuable and invaluable resource for the Ministry, and form an important part of the work plan for the development of art and culture in the municipality of Antigua Guatemala. Therefore, this portfolio does not plan to transfer the properties to any institution.”
“Soon the general population will be able to enjoy cultural activities in these facilities,” the document concludes.
When consulting the MP regarding said statement, it was reported that there is no knowledge of the reasons that motivated the Culture authorities to issue the statement, in which they reject the facilities being used by another entity other than them.
“The administration of Dr. María Consuelo Porras Argueta has been characterized by its notable efforts to promote actions in favor of female victims and combat extortion, so the reason for the pronouncement is unknown, as well as whether they have the will to work in favor of victims of violence once morest women and extortion,” said the Prosecutor’s Office.
On social networks, Internet users criticize the mayor of Antigua Guatemala for what they describe as alliances with the MP; However, the mayor reported in a video that was published on the commune’s social networks that the objective is to ensure that the Colonial City is a municipality free of violence once morest women and that this can only be achieved through alliances with other institutions, in this case the Prosecutor’s Office.
He added that the properties are not property of the commune but of the MP.
“One of the main crimes and complaints that exist, not only in Antigua Guatemala, but in the country, is the issue of violence once morest women. Part of our strategic vision and our goal is to be a municipality free of violence once morest women, and we have set that out, to look for how to mitigate it,” Asturias said in the publication.
He added that “we managed to have this framework agreement that we are regarding to sign and that, well, it has also already passed through the Municipal Council, where you can search and see how the Violence Against Women Prosecutor’s Office is in place with the Municipal Women’s Directorate with a certain program of psychologists, lawyers and having an adequate place to be able to care for the victim of violence once morest women, for which we were able to see the facilities, I would like to clarify that they are not municipal facilities, they are facilities that belong to the MP, the issue interinstitutional is key for a municipality.”
