This is what Food Minister Jacob Jensen (V) thinks before he meets with the Danish Riding Association on the matter later on Wednesday.
– It is fine that we can be happy about winning medals at the Olympics, but it must not be at the expense of the animals, says Jacob Jensen to DR.
The minister expects concrete proposals for tougher punishments in the area of animal welfare to be presented before long, when riders do not treat horses properly.
– This applies both in relation to fines, but also in relation to prison terms, if it should come to that.
– We do not look at it with lenient eyes if you violate the law. It must of course also have a consequence, says Jacob Jensen to DR.

The case with Carina Cassøe Krüth initially cost a fine of DKK 5,000 issued by the equestrian association’s disciplinary committee. Last week, they chose to sanction with a temporary exclusion from the national team, while the association’s appeal committee reassesses the case, which chairman of the Danish Equestrian Federation, Dan Boyter, calls historic to DR.
The minister states that in such cases one can go one step further:
– You could of course have chosen to report the person in question to the police, but as a politician I will not interfere in that. We have a federation which must also take responsibility for these things, says Jacob Jensen (V) to DR.
According to Dan Boyter, the riding association considers it a completely natural part of their development that they have a political dialogue.
– After all, we are a confederation that has the opportunity to go in and look at our sanction model, I am surprised that people express themselves in this way in relation to our sporting model. But I am prepared to listen, says Dan Boyter.
He does not believe that cases of this nature should be taken out of the sport’s sanctioning system.
– In general, for sports, we have a legislative and a judicial power. At board level, we can work with the sanction framework itself. We are definitely going to look at whether the sanctions are correct in relation to a case like this, he says to DR.
It is the second time in less than a year that he has called the riding association to a meeting on the subject.
Last year it dealt with the case of mistreatment of horses at the training center Helgstrand Dressage, which is owned by the dressage rider Andreas Helgstrand.
It was the TV 2 program “Operation X” that revealed that the horses were treated badly.
This time the association has been called to a meeting in the wake of the Olympics, where several cases came to light.
