The Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, Frank Vandenbroucke, wants to issue a Royal Decree to reserve the drug Ozempic for patients with type 2 diabetes. His cabinet confirmed this Monday evening.

Last week, we learned that several versions of Ozempic would no longer be available in Belgium in the coming weeks and months. Global demand for this drug is so high that production can no longer keep up.

The drug that reduces blood sugar levels is intended for diabetics, but since it can also help with weight loss, the demand for it “miracle drug” exploded.

For people suffering from type 2 diabetes, Ozempic is a necessary medication, says Vandenbroucke. Without it, their blood sugar levels can go out of control and they run a series of risks including loss of consciousness or even epileptic seizures.

The minister therefore wants to issue an order to reserve this drug for patients with type 2 diabetes. He will submit this draft AR to the working group on unavailability on Wednesday.

The decision will be temporary and valid as long as it is necessary, underlined the minister’s office.
