Measures in the admissions process and during training are taking effect – the number of applications has tripled since the beginning of the year
Vienna (OTS) – Interest in the police profession is on the rise once more. “In the area of personnel recruitment, we had to make intensive efforts because there is a shortage of workers in many areas. We have therefore taken a number of measures to counteract this shortage of personnel,” said Interior Minister Karner at a press conference as part of the course completion of five basic police training classes at Platz in der Burg in Vienna.
New measures in the police admission procedure
The police have modernized the entire selection process. Interested parties can apply online more easily, and contact options have also been created via the Internet in order to offer applicants modern communication options if they have any questions. A missing driver’s license or visible tattoos are no longer an obstacle to admission to basic police training. In addition, the training in the police schools has been adapted to current challenges, for example by intensifying training in the field of cybercrime and giving sport a higher priority during training.
In the future, police trainees will receive a free climate ticket, a higher salary during their training and the opportunity to obtain their driver’s license free of charge during their training. A bonus system for police officers should provide for other interested parties if they recruit new applicants. Most recently, the Minister of the Interior named the new campaign, which was first launched in the federal capital together with the City of Vienna, but has now been rolled out in all federal states.
Number of applications has tripled since the beginning of the year
The development proves us right, said the interior minister, referring to the new measures. The first successes in personnel development are already evident, with the number of applications having more than tripled since the beginning of the year. Almost 6,200 people have applied for police service since the beginning of the year, and more than 2,300 women and men are currently undergoing basic police training. “Today is a good day for security in Vienna, especially since we are able to hire 107 new colleagues,” said Interior Minister Karner.
Provincial Police President Gerhard Pürstl: “As one of the safest cities in the world, Vienna offers a multitude of challenges in daily police operations. In order to master these challenges in the best possible way, it is important to be able to welcome well-trained police officers to our ranks following their basic training. I am happy regarding everyone who is interested in the police profession and who, following completing their training, can contribute to security in our city.”
107 new police officers for Vienna
Afterwards, in a ceremony, 37 male and 70 female police students were accepted into regular service. A further 118 new police officers will be added to Vienna by the end of the year, and around 1,000 police trainees are expected to complete their training across Austria. At the beginning of September, 150 trainees will start basic police training in Vienna.
