THE FILM Budi Pekerti, starring Prilly Latuconsina and directed by Wregas Bhanuteja, has just aired on Netflix. The film was previously shown on cinema networks and had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

Set in Yogyakarta during the pandemic, the film Budi Pekerti tells the story of Mrs. Prani, a BK teacher whose video of her dispute with market visitors goes viral on social media. As a result of his actions which were deemed not to reflect the personality of a teacher, he and his family were bullied, looked for other faults and even threatened with losing their jobs.

“What happened in the film Budi Pekerti, the case is very relevant today with the growth of digital platforms and social media. “Everyone has the opportunity to comment on other people and the opportunity to become famous,” said Prilly Latuconsina at the National Film Day press conference with Netflix Indonesia at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Cikini, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, (27/3/2024).

Prilly, who was awarded the 2023 FFI Citra Cup for best female supporting actor thanks to her role in the film, feels that her film is close to many viewers. One of those who also watched the film Budi Pekerti was the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Retno Marsudi.

“I got a Whatsapp message from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Retno (Marsudi). He just watched Budi Pekerti on Netflix. That made us relieved. “Because according to Mrs. Retno, Budi Pekerti is a film that is very relevant to what is happening now,” said Prilly.

In Budi Pekerti, Prilly had to dive deeper into the complexity of the character she played. He must also speak Javanese krama inggil, the level of Javanese usually used to speak to elders. He also has to re-learn how to regulate speaking tempo, tone of voice, how to walk and facial expressions.

“Previously, we didn’t go through processes like that in previous films. Maybe this is also because of the complexity of the character I play. And the challenge with the Javanese language in this film, because I am of Sundanese and Ambonese descent, is very far from Javanese culture. “So the process is very special,” continued Prilly.
