“If you want to be a demagogue, do it alone!” cursed the Minister of Education, taking his things before heading for the exit.

Marwah Rizqy was asking a second question regarding school lunchtime care costs during an end-of-session debate on Thursday followingnoon.

Bernard Drainville had just argued that the Minister of Education cannot replace the school service centre, which in this case was responsible for a rate increase.

“I appreciate having problems in schools and service centers brought to my attention, but at some point we should remember that school service centers are accountable for their decisions, and therefore is to the directors […] to come and explain the decisions they make,” said Mr. Drainville.

This is where the Liberal MP replied: “Is the minister really talking to us regarding accountability today, following the mega setback?”, referring to the abandonment of the highway tunnel project between Quebec and Levi’s.

Visibly irritated by this remark, Bernard Drainville accused Marwah Rizqy, at a closed microphone, of playing “petty politics”. “Marwah, you are better than that, there. It’s demagogic, honestly … “, he let go.

At this precise moment, the Vice-President of the National Assembly invited the Minister to give the floor to Ms.me Rizqy, who recalled that the school service centers are a “creation” of the CAQ government. But Mr. Drainville was already picking up his things.

“I invite him to listen to me until the end, even if there is frustration, then I understand the frustration. But me, personally, when I come to have a debate at the end of the session, I expect to have an interlocutor”, reacted the Liberal MP, inviting the minister to “manage his emotions”.

“Demagogue!” replied Bernard Drainville, heading for the exit.

The spokesperson for Québec solidaire, Manon Massé, witnessed the exchange. “Screaming at other parliamentarians is simply unacceptable behavior in a democracy,” she reacted, adding that she expects “more respect and more height” from a minister.
