Minister of Culture on DVM Show Sparks Controversy: A Clash of Values

The Minister of Culture visited the DVM Show this Monday, February 12. An initiative which caused as much criticism from the far right as from certain rap fans.

Rachida Dati, Minister of All Cultures? However, the presence of the politician in a program devoted to rap was not unanimous. Broadcast on Twitch, the DVM Show is shared live from Aulnay-sous-Bois, in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, and promotes urban culture. The surprise intervention of the former Sarkozyst provoked reactions for diametrically opposed reasons from the extreme right and defenders of the suburbs on the networks.

Aya Nakamura, Kaaris, Koba La D… Many rap figures have visited the DVM Show set. So when its creator, Medja, announced on of one. “Make some noise for Rachida Dati!”, says one of the hosts. The Minister lends herself to the game – despite a show name that she occasionally misrepresents in VDM – and even ends up inviting the happy team to the Ministry of Culture: “You come with your “controllers”, with your equipment , you install everything and you come and do a DVM.” Surprised by those concerned, “We’re making noise, you know?”, replies one of them. No problem for Rachida Dati, “a Ministry of Culture without noise is not a Ministry of Culture”. The sequence will also make noise on the networks.

Culture shock

Unsurprisingly, the appearance of a member of the government in a show which embodies rap culture and its values was not to the taste of the far right. “Rachida Dati must explain her hilarious presence yesterday at the DVM show, a program which permanently promotes the deal,” demanded the president of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella. According to him, the DVM Show would be the “den of an anti-Semite”, in reference to the rapper Freeze Corleone, who had been the subject of an investigation for provoking racial hatred, ultimately dismissed – and more recently targeted by a investigation for condoning terrorism. Eric Zemmour, for his part, shared an extract from the program asking for the abolition of the Ministry of Culture, in favor of a “true Ministry of Fine Arts and French heritage”. Quite expected criticism, if it were limited to the far right.

But, more problematic for an initiative aimed at promoting urban culture, it was also the followers of the latter who set fire to the sequence. “You run a rap media. You host a show where you invite artists (who do rap) to perform and promote their future projects. You decide to invite a right-wing minister on your show… Really, when did it go wrong? [sic] ?» reacted on X the producer Diabi, known for his work with the rapper Nekfeu. Before adding: “We are still talking regarding a minister who was Sarkozy’s pawn, who I remind you wanted [sic] cleaning working-class neighborhoods with Kärcher. The same Nicolas Sarkozy who “initiated proceedings for 8 years once morest several rap groups (Sniper, La Rumeur,…) for their texts you have lost your mind”, concludes Diabi.

The DVMs assume

And the producer is not the only one to recall Rachida Dati’s posture. Among the responses of Internet users, an excerpt shows her, in 2007 and then spokesperson for Nicolas Sarkozy, imagining herself minister “of urban renewal with a Kärcher”, before realizing the presence of a camera “ Oh my, that’s scary,” she finishes. Another tweet shows her, during Nahel’s death, reacting to BFMTV by wondering regarding the adolescent’s educational background. So many elements which, among many others, raise eyebrows among rap fans and defenders of the suburbs, and have been reported to the DVM.

While some Internet users were hoping for regrets or even apologies from them, the DVM and Medja take full responsibility on Twitch. “You’ve never done anything in your life, even tweet all year long, we don’t give a damn, that’s how it is” he begins. “She’s the Minister of Culture, she didn’t come to talk politics, she came to congratulate the guys from Aulnay. […] She is welcome, she comes back whenever she wants, Medja continues, because if we listen to people, we have to stay locked up among ourselves. Well no bro.”

The words of the hit by the rap group Sniper, “Fadela”, which called out to “Rachida” in 2011 seem far away: “We gave you a good place, you forgot the hess”. In the meantime, Rachida Dati has become the target of punchlines – in more or less good taste – from several rappers like Kool Shen, Kaaris or Sexion d’Assaut. The story between the minister and rap continues.
