Croatian Defense Minister Mario Banozic, 44, was traveling in his personal car on Saturday and leaving the town of Vinkovci, 276 kilometers east of the capital Zagreb, when he collided with a van whose driver died . A few hours following the collision, Mr. Banozic, seriously injured in the head and rushed to hospital, was dismissed from his post by the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic. The latter expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.
According to the police, the accident occurred following Mr. Banozic overtook a truck driving in front of him, without having verified that this maneuver might be carried out without risk. “Due to suspicion of a traffic violation causing a traffic accident, criminal charges will be filed with the county prosecutor’s office once morest a 44-year-old driver,” the department said police of Vukovar-Srijem in a press release.
