Outgoing Minister Mickey Adriaansens (Economic Affairs & Climate) has visited Holland Shipyards Group. There she was informed regarding, among other things, the electric and fully autonomous sailing ferry that will be used at the Olympic Games in Paris next year and that has been 3D printed.
The 3D printing of the hull is done by 10XL, which has started to print 3D with LAAM (Large Area Additive Manufacturing) since it printed the first large products in 2016. The family business Holland Shipyards is developing the ferry, together with the Amsterdam company Reboat, which provides the technology for autonomous navigation. The hull measures 9 by 4 meters. According to 10XL, this is the world’s largest 3D print product made with post-consumer recyclate to date
Many innovations come together
10XL has printed with a recycled material, made from post-consumer waste. The self-developed slicer and extensive knowledge of materials played a major role in this project. Holland Shipyards builds the hull into ferries. These will be used in Paris next year during the Olympic Games. Outgoing minister Adriaansens was received by director Marco Hoogendoorn of the shipbuilding group together with Roel de Graaf, director of the branch organization Netherlands Maritime Technology. 10XL CEO and co-founder Gerbert Smits explained more regarding 3D printing. It uses r-UltraMarathon from Transmare CirQlair for this. The recyclate (PP) comes from waste bags. Mickey Adriaansens calls this 3D printing an example of how many innovations come together in one product. The working visit took place in the context of the Sector Agenda. She further said that it is important that these types of innovative companies from the maritime manufacturing industry continue to have access to both people and resources.
