Volcanic Eruption? No Problem! Basic Necessities Are All Sorted!

So, picture this—Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupts like it’s auditioning for a role in a disaster movie! And you thought your Monday was rough. But fear not, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf steps up to the plate, assuring us that there are enough basic necessities stocked up for the brave souls affected by the fiery chaos. What a relief! I mean, who knew volcanic eruptions came with a side of emergency supplies?
In his calm and collected fashion—rivaling that of a secretary on a Tuesday afternoon—Yusuf told a crowd of journalists (and possibly a potato) during a press conference, “In addition to government assistance, a lot of help is coming from many parties.” Thank heavens for that! I was worried that the volcano might take our snacks along with it, leaving us with nothing but hot air!
He went on, very generously, I must say, to say that they’d be monitoring the essentials. It’s like a supermarket sweep—but with less screaming and more lava! If stocks start running low, the central government will swoop in like a superhero in a spandex suit ready to save the day. Talk about keeping your lava-eating population happy!
And let’s not forget the numbers! Oh yes, BNPB reported a steady decline in evacuees, dropping from 12,761 to a mere 12,673. Because when faced with molten rock, it seems hanging out at the relative’s place sounds a bit cosier—who wouldn’t want to dodge a lava bath?
In more heartwarming news, the government is dishing out financial assistance faster than you can say, “Please don’t let me be next!” Each family gets Rp500,000 (just over $31)—which will be a welcome addition to their volcanic-themed shopping. And for the families of the nine deceased victims? A hefty Rp15 million each. It’s a bit of a grim lottery, isn’t it? “Congratulations! You’ve won… a lifetime without your loved one!”
And let’s not ignore those 60 injured victims who’ll pocket a cool Rp5 million (around $314)—because nothing says “Get well soon!” like a little cash injection, right?
Now, you might be thinking, “What’s the deal with airport operations?” Well, if you thought they were going to shut down just because of a little eruption, think again! They’ve normalized faster than a celebrity’s scandal disappearing from the headlines.
In conclusion, while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki may have turned the world upside down, the response from the government gives us a sizable dose of optimism—mixed with a sprinkle of insanity. After all, when life gives you volcanoes, start stocking up on marshmallows, and let’s make it a party!
So, stay tuned, everyone! Who knows what else this volatile world has in store for us? Until next time, keep your helmets on and your marshmallows toasted!

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf has confirmed that the stocks of essential items for those affected by the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, are adequate for at least the next two weeks, alleviating immediate concerns for the displaced families.
During a press conference following a meeting with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Yusuf stated, “In addition to government efforts, there has been a significant influx of assistance from various organizations and individuals, ensuring comprehensive support for the evacuees.”
Yusuf noted that the Ministry of Social Affairs and the BNPB have committed to overseeing the availability of basic necessities for the victims diligently. He emphasized that should supplies diminish, the central government is ready to dispatch additional resources promptly.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Social Affairs is dedicated to ensuring that social aid centers in East Nusa Tenggara and neighboring areas function efficiently to cater to the needs of those affected by the volcanic eruption.
Yusuf also mentioned, “Based on BNPB’s previous experiences, we anticipate that the availability of essentials may begin to taper off next month. We are prepared to send in supplementary supplies at that time.”
According to the latest data from BNPB, the number of individuals relocated to evacuation centers following the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption has shown a gradual decline. Specifically, as of Tuesday, the total number of evacuees across the seven designated centers established by BNPB and the Ministry of Social Affairs has decreased to 12,673 from 12,761.
Some of those displaced have opted to stay with relatives for better comfort, as the volcanic activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki continues to subside.
The governmental response includes a financial support system, providing Rp500 thousand (approximately US$31.43) to each family for a duration of six months while they await the establishment of permanent housing. Additionally, families of the nine individuals who tragically lost their lives will receive Rp15 million (around US$942.97) in compensation.
Moreover, over 60 injured victims are set to receive aid amounting to Rp5 million (approximately US$314.22) each to assist with their recovery and rehabilitation needs.
