Mining pollution receives criticism – again

Several times the ministry has been told that they do not manage the closed mines as required by the Pollution Act.

In 2021, the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries received criticism for a lack of follow-up on mine pollution.

– In this year’s follow-up, we see that the administration is still not carried out in line with the requirements of the Pollution Act, said Auditor General Karl Eirik Schjøtt-Pedersen when he presented The National Audit Office annual review of the administration.

He pointed out that in the last two years the ministry has failed to follow up on measures imposed on them in 1993, 2003 and 2008.

– The ministry lacks the knowledge to meet the requirements of the Pollution Act for several of the mines they own, he added.

State Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries Tomas Norvoll (Ap) says Everything that his assessment is that it is not correct that measures have not been implemented in 2022 and 2023 to fulfill the environmental orders.

– When it comes to realistic budgeting of allocations for DMF’s work with security and environmental measures, I agree with the National Audit Office that there is still potential for improvement in this area, and the ministry is working to improve this, concludes Norvoll.
