Urology at Brixen Hospital offers minimally invasive therapy for benign prostate enlargement. The surgical technique has been approved in Italy for 5 years.
What man of a certain age doesn’t know this?
Nocturnal urge to urinate, weak urine stream, incomplete bladder emptying. Still dismissed by most patients as a normal consequence of aging that needs to be dealt with somehow, but for experts it is a treatable condition, namely benign prostate enlargement.
Going to the urologist can massively improve the quality of life, and in addition to the medical and classic surgical therapy options, there is now also a very efficient, minimally invasive alternative available, as Michael Aigner, head of urology at the Brixen Hospital, explains:
“The REZUM technique involves water vapor sclerotherapy of the prostate, which is carried out under partial anesthesia and only requires day-care admission. In principle, the method can be used on all patients suffering from the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement, with the main focus being on younger patients who are understandably not interested in taking medication for life, or on older patients with debilitating comorbidities where a classic prostate operation would represent a significantly increased surgical risk.”
Patients report an improvement in symptoms just one week following treatment, with Primar Aigner pointing out that the healing process takes around three months. “Nevertheless, following treatment, patients can return to their daily routine following just a few days, which is of course very helpful for patients in their professional lives.”
If the prostate tissue grows back following the treatment and causes symptoms once more, this gentle REZUM treatment can be repeated at any time.
