Heartfelt Innovations: A Cheeky Take on Cardiac Surgery at Paolo Giaccone
Hold onto your bypasses folks, because the Paolo Gi
The Cardiac Surgery unit of the “Paolo Giaccone” Polyclinic has embraced a groundbreaking minimally invasive technique for treating cardiac valvular diseases, employing access through the axillary cavity. This innovative approach marks a significant step forward in cardiac surgery, providing patients with a dramatically less traumatic alternative to conventional procedures, leading to notable reductions in recovery times and enhancing post-operative comfort.
The minimally invasive method was adopted through the clinical expertise of Doctor Utz Kappert from the Dresden Heart Center, an esteemed institution that serves as a global reference in this specialized procedure.
The use of advanced instrumentation and precision technologies enables surgeons to operate via a small incision in the axillary region, eliminating the need for sternotomy. This innovative technique facilitates a more efficient surgical process, while providing patients with a less invasive experience.
The Director of the Cardiac Surgery unit of the Polyclinic, Vincenzo Argano, emphasizes: “The operations were both carried out through a minimally invasive axillary approach which surpasses the current approach through the anterior chest wall used in other centres. The advantages are related to better surgical exposure, which allows multiple valve defects to be treated simultaneously, and to the excellent cosmetic effect as the small scar is hidden in the axillary cavity.” This enhances both the functional outcome and the aesthetic results for our patients.
The General Director of the AOUP, Maria Grazia Furnari, highlights: “This innovation is the result of a constant commitment to research, updating the skills of the staff and the technologies of the Cardiac Surgery operational unit, along with the dedication of the Company university hospital to deliver cutting-edge care, aimed at ensuring maximum safety and optimal comfort for patients. I extend my gratitude to the cardiac surgery team led by Doctor Argano and all the professionals who have played a vital role in achieving this remarkable milestone.”
Argano further notes: “These interventions are part of the continuous renewal of the activity of the Cardiac Surgery and Cardioanesthesia departments of the Palermo Polyclinic, which are increasingly focusing on mini and micro-invasive interventions for the benefit of patients who choose to be treated at our institution. These procedures complement the array of percutaneous and surgical treatments available in our center, which has proudly been a part of the Sicilian Hub Centers for the treatment of valvular pathologies for the past two years.” This commitment underscores our dedication to enhancing patient care and expanding our capabilities in innovative cardiac treatments.
