The mussel shell recycling test project was set up this summer in Lunch Garden establishments in the Brussels region (Brussels-Centre, Auderghem, Evere, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and Drogenbos). Mineralio collects the empty shells by bicycle courier, then cleans and grinds them. The result is then transformed into a new raw material that can be used in different sectors: cosmetics, animal feed or in terrazzo, a material used for the manufacture of plates, bowls or trays.
Every month, some three tonnes of mussel shells are recycled in this way, reducing carbon emissions, according to Mineralio. “In the case of Lunch Garden, it is more than 1.3 tonnes of CO2 saved per month. And at the same time, we are giving new life to mussel shells”, highlights its founder, Simon Gillet.
