BUMN Mining Industry Holding MIND ID is encouraging the downstream mining industry in Indonesia. The reason is, downstreaming will strengthen the industrial structure, provide added value to a commodity, and provide employment opportunities.

MIND ID Corporate Secretary Heri Yusuf said that downstreaming was one of the three mandates given by the government to MIND ID.

“MIND ID carries out its mandate as the parent state-owned mining company in maximizing downstreaming,” he said in his official statement, Friday (19/4).

The downstreaming of the mining sector carried out by BUMN Holding Mining Industry aims to strengthen the industrial structure, as well as provide added value for Indonesia.

“Downstreaming is not just a strategy, but also an important mission in developing Indonesia’s industry and economy. The aim is to increase the added value of domestic products, create jobs and reduce dependence on imports,” he said.

He added, MIND ID is committed to continuing downstream efforts by involving various stakeholders, including government, industry, academics and the community.

“MIND ID also continues to develop innovation, technology and human resources to increase the added value of domestic mining products. Apart from that, MIND ID has taken strategic steps to expand the market, increase the competitiveness of domestic products and ensure environmental sustainability,” he concluded .

Previously, mining observer R Sukhyar assessed that MIND ID had been proactive in supporting the government’s downstream program. The former Director General of Minerals and Coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is of the opinion that downstreaming has had a positive impact on sustainable economic development in Indonesia.

“MIND ID no longer plays at the intermediate product level, but must aim at products that are more downstream, even down to manufactured products,” said Sukhyar in a discussion entitled The Role of Mining in Energy Transition and Downstreaming.

Sukhyar gave an example, in the transportation sector, efforts to reduce fuel oil (BBM) consumption have been realized through building an electric vehicle ecosystem. Indonesia has a competitive advantage because it has large nickel resource potential, namely as a key raw material in making electric vehicle batteries.

Apart from that, various other mining minerals needed for the electric vehicle industry are also available and managed very well within the MIND ID Group. As a result, through downstream efforts, MIND ID will have an important role in developing the electric vehicle ecosystem.
