MINCIN apologizes for the delays in the Basic Basket and points to a culprit 2024-08-09 00:33:57

Authorities from the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN) apologized this week for the persistent delays in Basic Basket products throughout Cuba, and pointed to several causes, but especially to one “culprit.”

In a note shared on its official website, MINCIN detailed that the rains caused by the tropical wave that hit the island in recent days complicated the distribution of food supplies in several provinces, with Guantánamo being one of the most affected.

Given the weather conditions, they said they tried to urgently transport and distribute as much merchandise as possible for the standard family basket in the 10 municipalities of this province.

According to Alis Azahares Torreblanca, governor of Guantánamo, it was reported that there were still 508 tons of rice to be extracted from the port of Santiago de Cuba. The unloading operation was affected by the rains, further complicating the logistics.

In addition, work was being done to transport wheat flour to ensure the daily production of bread, as well as oil and other essential products such as grains, sugar and rice, to ensure the basic basket.

MINCIN and the eternal delays of the Basic Basket

On this occasion they pointed to the usual culprit, the MINCIN for the enormous delays in the delivery of the Basic Basket and in addition to “the complications due to the rains” they assured that a complex fuel shortage, with limited reserves to maintain essential services in the province.

Faced with this situation, Azahares Torreblanca urged to seek “local solutions to ensure the export of agricultural products and the maintenance of economic and social activity.”

The MINCIN also addressed the fact that there are security problems, including the incidence of theft and other crimes, failures in generator sets and pumping stations in rural communities, the concerns of the population and the measures taken by inspection bodies against high and speculative prices.
