Deaths from Hurricane Milton in Florida (United States) increased to at least 16, several of them due to tornadoes that occurred before the arrival of the hurricane, which has already dissipated in the Atlantic.

The figure, according to the accounts kept by the news network CNNare added to at least a thousand rescues carried out by the relief forces until the night of October 10.

However, state Governor Ron DeSantis also said the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

According to St. Lucie Sheriff Keith Pearson, multiple tornadoes caused by the hurricane left several dead after hitting a manufactured home community.

“All their houses with them inside were lifted, moved, destroyed. “I mean everything in the path of the hurricane or this tornado disappeared,” Pearson explained in an interview with CNN.

The hurricane made landfall on the night of Wednesday the 9th in Siesta Key, near the city of Sarasota, with maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour, that is, with category 3.

Hurricane Milton weakened after making landfall

The hurricane weakened in the early morning hours of October 10 and was moving east-northeast at about 25 kilometers per hour.

Before Milton reached the peninsula, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department reported “multiple fatalities” from a tornado that occurred on the afternoon of October 9 at a retirement community.

The damage from the winds of Hurricane Milton has even reached the eastern coast of Florida, after leaving devastation especially in Tampa Bay where it entered.

The cyclone has left at least 2.6 million customers in this state without electricity, according to the accounting of the specialized website PowerOutage. The counties most affected by the lack of electricity are Pinellas, Manatee and Hillsborough.

Likewise, alerts for flash floods and landslides remain due to the amount of rain left by Hurricane Milton.
