Millions of people take shelter from a major storm of snow, ice and strong winds in the US

A storm of snow, ice and strong winds affects the southeast and the Atlantic coast in the United States. The storm caused millions of people to take refuge to withstand the inclement weather. The press details that there were power system outages, road problems and flight suspensions.

The US media reports that more than 80 million inhabitants are under climate alert. The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm is headed for New England and southern Canada. The agency said the frigid conditions might last until Tuesday.

From noon on Sunday some 235,000 customers were left without power in the southeast and more than 150,000 in the states of the Carolinas. The storm caused damage in the state of Florida and even flooding in coastal areas. In parallel, thousands of flights had to be cancelled.

Transportation was affected in the Carolinas, while interstate highway I-95 was closed in North Carolina. Some 3,000 flights within, to or from the US were canceled Sunday night and another 4,200 were delayed. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp had declared a state of emergency on Friday.

The Washington Post reports that Virginia and North Carolina declared states of emergency early. The NWS reported that flurries were reported in Pensacola, Florida, while warm Atlanta had a snowfall. The service warned that on the Atlantic coast winds might approach hurricane force.
