Millions of dollars worth of weapons from Mexico seized in El Salvador, where were they taking them?

The National Navy of El Salvador seized a arsenal (with different types of weapons) that was carrying a speedboat from Mexico with apparent destination to Ecuador y 1.2 tons of cocaine on Ecuadorian vessels sailing in the waters of the Pacific, Salvadoran President Juan Carlos I reported on Friday, Nayib Bukele.

What weapons were in the arsenal from Mexico seized in El Salvador?

Buekele said that in that first boat, the arsenal which was supposedly going to be sent to Ecuador, which was made up of:

  • 20 AK-47 rifles
  • 1 M60 machine gun
  • 1 Barret 50 sniper rifle

“We have reached a new record for the greatest distance of seizure: 1,004 nautical miles (1,859 kilometers) from our coasts,” Bukele said.

He added that in the last 90 days, 100,000 pesos have been seized. 9.3 tons of cocaine on the high seas, valued at $233 million.

El Salvador is part of a list of the United States Government of the highest production and narcotics transitannounced last year, along with countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, MexicoNicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

The President of the United States sends this list to Congress every year to determine the budget dedicated to combating drug trafficking.
