Million overview of Norwegian technical language – adressa.no

This week, the Research Council is announcing up to NOK 120 million for investment in Norwegian language research. The call is aimed at the Norwegian academic and research community within linguistics.

Around 90 per cent of the scientific publications from Norwegian institutions are now in English. In natural sciences and technology, hardly any Norwegian-language research is published at all.

– For a vibrant Norwegian professional language, we need solid research-based knowledge regarding our language. We now ensure that. The research environments in the area have been reduced over time, so a large-scale investment in these fields is now needed. I hope many different professional communities will come together, so that we can ensure a vibrant Norwegian professional language in the future, says Research and Higher Education Minister Oddmund Hoel (Sp).

Mari Sundli Tveit, who is the executive director of the Research Council, says the initiative should help to strengthen and consolidate relevant professional environments, promote collaboration and safeguard the need for professional expertise in society in the long term.

– It may be appropriate for several professional communities to collaborate on preparing a joint application. There is no requirement that these professional environments are geographically co-located, says Tveit.

The application deadline is 18 September – the awards will take place early next year.
